Is Mandatory Rotation a Sensible Approach?

While attending a recent K-9 conference I had the opportunity to speak with a group of handlers from the same agency. From their conversation and their presence in a classroom-oriented seminar, they appeared to be dedicated K-9 officers. Our discussion turned to what they described as a prevailing mindset of members of their administration ? the ?one and done? approach to tenure in the K-9 Unit ? and they asked me for my position on the subject. My reaction was and is stark opposition. One of the handlers asked me (perhaps jokingly, perhaps not) whether I would be willing to write a letter to his top brass, because his dog was nearing retirement and he would soon be forced out of the unit, as well as out of his role as the trainer for his department?s five dog teams.

How to Teach Your Dog to Fetch (Article)

During my holidays this year we stayed with some very close friends out on the west coast. They had been considering adding a dog to their family that includes their 7-year-old son, Jonn. Upon our arrival I was happy to see that they had done their homework and narrowed their breed selection.

ASK THE DOG TRAINER Fetches another New Trainer!

by Carrie Boyko, CEB
Only recently did I introduce you to Mike Shamp, a trainer that has joined our Ask the Dog Trainer staff. Today I am here to announce the addition of one more delightful dog trainer, Terry Lynn Cuyler.

Known to many as the Paws Prof because of her working nickname, Terry is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) and is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer--Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA). That's a mouthful, huh? To explain it as easily as possible, it translates to lots of extra training. This training means you get more bang for your buck!

With a Masters degree in Education, Terry uses her interest and skill at teaching wherever they are needed. She enjoys taking part in READing Paws, offering a canine reading partner, Tchaikato children who need a reading companion that doesn't judge.  Terry is actively involved with the APDT and is a CGC (Canine Good Citizen) Evaluator for the American Kennel Club (AKC).

With dog therapy work near and dear to Terry's heart, she completed the training to become a Delta Society Evaluator, and also offers in-home training at all levels.

When I met Terry, Oliver and I had the delightful experience of running a sample "Rally" course for the first time. Rally is an AKC event that introduces dogs and their handlers to obedience performance in a less competitive, lighter atmosphere. Teamwork and enthusiasm are encouraged to make this a fun, bonding event for both handler and dog. Oliver and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience as well as Terry's coaching. I tucked her name in the back of my head, and here she is...a part of our dog training team at All Things Dog Blog.

Terry's first post will appear soon. I hope you enjoy her approach and will contact us with your questions for our ASK THE DOG TRAINER column. You can reach us at LetsAdoptaDogPark@gmail.com with your questions for our dog training team. Happy tails!

To Park, Or Not To Park? (Blog)

There are two sides to this issue. Those who want more space in city parks to let their dogs roam “leash-free” while others want park space available just for kids, walking, biking etc.  Tonight, June 4th, many standing to support both sides will meet to debate a new policy that would allow neighbourhood groups to apply for off-lease areas for dogs in their own local park area.

Spring Issues (Article)

With the warm weather and melting of the snow, dogs and outdoor cats will be getting more reign to roam around as they will no longer be limited by the avalanches of snow Toronto has received this winter.
