Barking For a Home - March 2010 - Loki (Article)

Loki is a sweetheart of a guy. He is sweet, funny, happy and active for a dog his age – 9 years young! Loki loves to "talk" and makes grumpily rumbles at times. He does have the odd accident in the house, this has not been a regular occurrence but one adopters would need to continue to work on and have patience with. Overall, Loki is easy to live with and is a gentle and kind little fellow.

Stone Temple Pilots Reunited In Hopes Of Opening For Led Zeppelin, Bassist Says

'If time allows, there will definitely be new music,' Robert DeLeo adds of STP's future.
By Chris Harris

There are a number of reasons why Stone Temple Pilots decided to reunite after nearly five years apart — some are obvious, and others, not so much.

Of course, the financial windfall of reviving the grunge stalwarts for an extensive U.S. tour was too good to pass up, and bassist Robert DeLeo readily admits as much. And then there are the fans, the ones who had been with STP since the very beginning as well as those who discovered the band only after it first split back in 2003 and who, woefully, have yet to catch the Pilots live.

On a more personal level, though, Stone Temple Pilots' resurrection was purely selfish, and very much an anticipatory (not to mention optimistic) move on the band's part: If, after the months and months of rumors and denials, there ever is a full-on Led Zeppelin reunion tour, STP wanted to be ready to offer their services as an opening act.

"Believe me, that was one of the reasons," laughed DeLeo. "We thought, 'We should get together now, in case Zeppelin does tour.' I'm serious, man. That would be one hell of a bill: STP and Led Zeppelin. I mean, we could play a doghouse, out in the middle of the ocean, and if I got to play with Zeppelin, that would be a highlight of my life."

Yes, DeLeo — and the rest of the band — had several reservations about raising STP from the dead — a feat DeLeo jokingly referred to as "Mission Impossible." For the band's members, the idea of regrouping was terrifying at first, but with time, the boys settled their differences and tried to think positive.

"For me, it was about putting down some of the things that I was used to getting bitten by," explained the bassist — who, with guitar-playing brother Dean DeLeo, has been collaborating with Peter Frampton on material for his next LP. "After you get bitten, it's hard to go back. I wanted to go into this with an open frame of mind and a positive attitude and just have fun with it. We should have fun with it, which God knows we didn't always have with our career when we were younger. If that's all I can say, and that's what I can get out of this reunion, great.

"I think I speak for all of us when I say there's a lot of unfinished business that we didn't get around to the first go," he continued. "Enough time has gone by, and it feels really good to be back. I don't really want to put too much thought into how it feels — I'm just kind of going with it and keeping a good positive attitude about it. I just needed to get over the things that we all needed to get over, and that's been working so far. If everyone shows up and does this thing, I think it's going to be really amazing."

DeLeo claims that during recent rehearsals, STP were "sounding as good as ever," and he credits sobriety as part of the reason the band's in tip-top shape.

"My brother's going on four years of sobriety," he said. "We have a lot more clarity in the band now, and I think with clarity comes appreciation. I saw that the other night, when we played [a secret gig in Los Angeles]. I saw it in my eyes, and in the eyes of the rest of the band. There's a lot more rock in this band now."

As for an STP record, DeLeo is not 100 percent sure that's going to happen. The goal for STP over the next few weeks, he said, is to reacquaint themselves with their songbook and prepare for their return to the road. Once the band is back in that mindset, the bassist said new STP material is very possible.

"I've always got stuff written, and there's always a long list of songs that are always there — it's a matter of timing," DeLeo said. "If time allows, there will definitely be new music. I think it would be silly not to release new music. I'd like to believe we still have a writing relationship, but the first step is getting reacquainted with what we know."

While STP were on hiatus, frontman Scott Weiland teamed up with Velvet Revolver, and the DeLeo brothers joined forces with Filter's Richard Patrick for Army of Anyone — who are now on hiatus after releasing a poorly received self-titled LP. Does DeLeo foresee an AOA reunion somewhere down the line?

"You never know," he said. "It's just like STP — I didn't know if I was going to return. Whether we get back together and do anything, I think we made a great record, bottom line. That's all that matters to me. If we make another one, I want to make sure it's great, and that applies to STP and anything I do. But I was pretty heartbroken over [the feeble response to AOA's album]."

John Mellencamp for Senate?

Oh, the wonders of the internet! Over 3,500 people have joined the ever-growing Facebook group "Draft John Mellencamp for Senate," hoping that the musician will replace Indiana Democratic Senator Evan Bayh (who is not seeking re-election). Mellencamp, who is from Indiana, has showed interest in politics over the years, including writing numerous politically-charged songs, founding Farm Aid, and making many statements in open distaste for the Republican Party. He even refused to allow John McCain to use his music during the 2008 election. Of course, Mellencamp is lacking in experience, but in this "the year of the amateur" (according to the L.A Times's Patrick Goldstein) combined with growing internet support, this might not be that much of an issue. Plus, people like Brent Budowski of "The Hill" claim that Mellencamp is "one of the great advocates of small-town America," which some might believe is enough for the rock star to make it all the way to the Senate.

Justin Bieber Says 'Girlfriends Are Trouble'

Pop star admits he doesn't have much time for dating right now.

Now that Justin Bieber properly took over the VMAs, lined up a bunch of projects and even announced the release date for his forthcoming 3-D movie, one might think he would want to find that special someone to share his days with. But just moments after winning his Best New Artist VMA on Sunday, the 16-year-old megastar explained that he's too busy for love right now.

"I mean, girlfriends are trouble at this age," he explained to MTV News. "Girls are fun to hang out with but, like, having that one steady girl ... we're constantly traveling and one girl's not gonna really [work]. You can't really have one girl. I don't really have any crushes at the moment."

With so much going on in his life, the "U Smile" singer is just trying to balance his career and personal life. "Right now, the best thing is [that we're] just teenagers having fun doing what we love," he explained. "We're just staying ourselves and remaining humble."

With his "Never Say Never" collaborator Jaden Smith by his side, Bieber revealed that he and the Smith family may work together again in the future, with Bieber possibly working with Will Smith on his next project. However, Bieber kept the details sparse, saying, "We're trying to figure something out."

In addition to trying to re-team with pal Jaden and family, Bieber said that for his next album, he wants to work with his friend and fellow Canadian Drake. "[It'll] probably [come out] fourth quarter next year," he said. "Drake is gonna be on that album. I'm not sure [who else]. I'm gonna ask him if he can get [Lil] Wayne on there."

The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there's plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

ASK THE VET, with Dr. Pat: Natural Options for Flea Control

by Pat Bradley, DVM
(c) Carrie Boyko
Patti with
Sully, Pip and Smudge

Dr. Pat,

I see you use holistic practices as well as conventional.  How do you feel about using essential oils such as red thyme, cedarwood, citronella on a bandana to put around my dogs' necks to repel fleas when I take them on their walks?  I use Comfortis but fleas still jump on them when we are walking.

Thank you!

Patti
-------------------------------------------

Hello Patti:

What a great idea! Essential oil on a bandana makes the dog less attractive to what you don't want--fleas--and more attractive to what you do want--admiration of your cute canine BFF!

Essential oils are very concentrated, so another advantage of the bandana is that it keeps the oil from making direct contact with your dog's skin.

If your dog is large, there might be too much territory between the two ends for the bandana to be effective. Incredibly, fleas are athletic enough to jump onto even a fast-moving, wagging tail! (You don't have to LOVE fleas, but you have to be amazed at the things they can do. And give them credit; they are outsmarting chemical manufacturers so far. We make chemicals that absolutely get rid of fleas, however, they absolutely get rid of humans and dogs, too.)

So, in the case of a large dog, spritz the coat before walking with homemade repellent spray:

  • Two or three drops of an essential oil
  • 1 cup of distilled or spring water
  • Put into a spray bottle.
  • Shake well, spray and GO!
Any of the essential oils that you mentioned could be used. You might need to try several before finding the best one for your geographical ara. One of my very favorites is peppermint oil.

And then--you knew it was coming--a list of the cautions:
  • Essential oils are toxic to cats, so DON'T DO THIS WITH CATS!!
  • Chemically-sensitive dogs can get headaches or nausea from essential oils. Watch for signs that your dog isn't feeling well during or after exposure.
  • Don't let dogs (or children) chew on the bandana. While the oils are generally safe, they can cause diarrhea or vomiting in sensitive critters.
Happy trails!

Body of Missing Actor Found!

This afternoon Vancouver police reveal that a body has been discovered and they believed it may be the body of missing "Growing Pains" actor Andrew Koenig. CNN.com is now confirming that the body is indeed that of Koenig. Koenig has been missing since Valentine's Day and sources reveal the body was discovered in Vancouver's Stanley Park, which so happens to be an area that Vancouver police were heavily searching in the days since Koenig's disappearance.
Koenig's family and friends decided to do their own search of the area and that is when the body was found. Koenig's father "Star Trek" actor Walter Koenig revealed in a press conference that his son "took his own life".

Koenig's disappearance was first reported after the actor missed a return flight to Los Angeles, after visiting with friends in Canada. He was said to have been in a depressed state leading up to his disappearance and stopped taking anti-depressant medications a little over a year ago.
