Have you noticed that your dog seems to be more unruly than ever? It is common to see him pacing the hallway, counter surfing and dropping toys at your feet. This is a common time of year that has people picking up the phone, to make that inevitable call to their trainer. It starts with the same lament, "my dog used to be so good, and recently all his training has gone out the window".

Park Etiquette (Article)
With the bulk of the winter behind us, the dog owners rejoice. Spring is here, and the dog parks are more popular than ever before. While the rural areas have the luxury of open spaces, the urban dwellers rely on their dog parks. Along with that comes the realization that the dog owners must also rely on each other for an unwritten code of ethics when it comes to dog park etiquette.

Just What is a "Dentistry"? (Article)
In the last article, we discussed different options for dental homecare. Eventually, however, regardless of how diligent you have been about brushing every day, you will find that dental tartar – that nasty, yellow/brown hard buildup – is starting to accumulate. If this process continues, plaque and tartar will start to invade underneath the gumline, causing gingivitis, and eventually periodontal disease, which can lead to pain and tooth loss.
The Target of Target?s Demise
By now most of you have heard the story of Target, the hero dog originally from Afghanistan who was accidentally euthanized at Pinal County, Arizona's animal control last week in a case of mistaken identity. You may have also heard that the shelter worker who put Target to sleep has since been fired for making the tragic error.
My heart goes out to Target?s family for their loss, this is indeed a sad story, but I?m dismayed to see the shelter and shelter worker cast as the scapegoats or worse, as villains in this tragedy. They did indeed make a terrible, irreversible mistake but the real problem lies much deeper than this single, highly publicized incident.

Tag Team Fetch During Indian Summer DIP
DIPs have proven to be such an amazing experience since launching them back in the beginning of the summer. Not only have I had the pleasure to watch dogs learn social skills or get their mojo back, but it's been a great exposure to more and more nuanced awareness of dog/dog social skills that endlessly fascinate me. This week has been a glorious burst of Indian Summer after a surprising couple of inches of heavy, wet snow just four days ago. Today at DIP we had 9 dogs, nearly a full house -- Trip and Bean, Bosco My Training Project, visiting boarding guests Zin and Jackie, and visiting dogs Bella & Tango, Rio and Poker. All but Bosco are adult dogs ranging from 1 to 10 years old. Medium to XL, males and females, sporty and spicy!

How Sparky would look with floppy ears.

He pulls funny faces when he's barking.

Very funny faces.

He also pulls silly faces when I ask him to balance things on his nose.
Um, why am I doing this again?

And exceedinly happy faces when asked to sit on a log and pose like a bunny.

Kota doesn't sit like a bunny on a log. Or sit on logs at all really.
It hurts my bum!

5 Tips To Prevent Dog Anxiety At Halloween (Article)
Halloween and your dog! Some pet owners are fortunate and have dogs that love Halloween as much as their owners. However, most dogs probably show some stress and anxiety during this time of ghosts and goblins. The doorbell is ringing a lot, people are coming in and going out, the noise level may be quite high - all of this adds to your dog's stress. Here are a few suggestions of what to do with your dog during Halloween in order to reduce the anxiety level, of you and your dog.

Jobs With Dogs (Article)
Working with animals can be one of the most rewarding ways to spend your life. To be able to turn your passion into the way you make your living is truly a blessing. There are many jobs that are animal related but the one that comes to mind most frequently is animal doctor, or Veterinarian. Veterinary medicine is now becoming as specialized as human medicine. You still have your general practitioners, the Veterinarians who see your pet on a regular basis but you can now include specialties that range from dentistry, behavior, skin and even doctors who deal solely with orthopedics.

Dogs Have Teeth Too! (Article)
veterinarians have had to do a lot of continuing education to learn about dental problems, and how to properly deal with them. More and more veterinary clinics now have a dental Xray machine, which is an invaluable (and indispensable, in my opinion) tool that we can use to diagnose and properly treat dental disease in dogs and cats.
The Importance of Distraction vs. Correction (Article)
We are all taught in elementary math that a Negative plus a Negative will never equal a Positive. Keep this in mind when working with dogs. If you correct, scold, punish every time a dog displays a negative behaviour, they only learn that this is what you don't want. They aren't being taught what you *do* want.

Another critical skill is India?s ability to come to you no matter what distraction is present. The goal is to be able to get her attention from a distance and call her back to you. A basic Come When Called command is a crucial skill. As in any training situation, you must have control of the exercise and demonstrate to India that you are in charge. She needs to respond to you every time you issue a command. Begin by calling India from a short distance of just 4 to 5 feet away. Assume a crouched, playful position to get her attention. Use a happy, playful voice to call her, praising her as soon as she turns her head to look at you, and each step along the way. If you use a firm voice, shout the command or lose your patience, she will avoid going to an ?angry boss.? The come when called command is a happy command and must be executed no matter what she has done or has in her mouth. Gradually increase the distance until she responds and comes from at least 30 feet.

Ask The Vet - Springer Spaniel Puppy With Tremors (Blog)
We have a Springer spaniel puppy that is 6 months old. Since about 4 mths. she has developed a tremor in her jaw. While petting her, you can actually see the tremor starting as the muscle along the jaw line start quivering, as does her eye. She does not seem to be in pain, but then again, often humans don't know when their dog is in pain.

Barking For A Home - November - Mason (Article)
Mason, an approximately 7 year old American Bulldog, was found as a stray and taken in by a local municipal shelter. With such a wonderful personality, shelter staff felt he needed to have a second chance at love and life and contacted Animal Angel Rescue Foundation (AARF) to see if they would be in a position to take Mason into their program.
